    Age of Onset Onset typically occurs between ages 30 and 60.
    Description Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare, progressive syndrome believed to be autoimmune in nature, though the cause is currently unknown. SPS is characterized by decreased inhibition of the central nervous system, which leads to greater muscle activity causing flares of severe stiffness and spasms, usually in the muscles of the trunk and limbs. Triggers include noise, touch, and emotional distress. SPS may result in disability, fractures due to severe muscle contractions, and abnormal posture. Comorbidities may include diabetes, thyroiditis, vitiligo, and pernicious anemia. There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed through treatment.
